About & FAQ
For nearly three decades, I designed things you'd never touch — interfaces, apps, software, the invisible architecture behind screens. Along the way I picked up a habit that never left: sweating the small stuff. The pixel that's one off. The interaction that feels almost right. The kind of detail most people never consciously notice, but somehow always feel.
In 2025, that career took an unexpected turn, and I found myself with room to lean fully into something I'd been doing on the side for over a decade: woodworking. After enough friends and family telling me I should sell what I was making, I finally listened.
Edwards Design Co. is what happens when that same obsession with detail gets pointed at something you can hold. Every product gets the same care I used to put into a screen — measured, considered, and made to last. Not just through a few years of daily use, but long enough to become something you hand down, not replace. Whether it's pixels or walnut, I've always just wanted to build things worth keeping.
I'm incredibly grateful for the chance to do work I love. Thanks for your support.
Everyday use:
Every board works equally well as a cutting board for daily prep and as a charcuterie board for serving — small boards suit two people or a small gathering, large boards suit a full spread for a crowd.
Cleaning:
Wash by hand with warm, soapy water after each use, rinse, and dry immediately with a towel.
Dishwasher and soaking:
Never put your board in the dishwasher — the heat and prolonged water exposure will warp and crack solid wood. Avoid soaking it in the sink too, even by hand; extended water exposure causes the same problem.
Hot cookware, microwave, and oven:
Keep hot pots, pans, and dishes off the board directly — hot food itself (like a seared steak) is fine, but hot cookware can scorch or stress the wood over time. Never put your board in the microwave or oven — beyond the wood itself not being safe for either, the metal feet make this a hard no.
Knife habits and odors:
Try to avoid sticking a knife tip into the board to set it down — repeated marks in one spot wear the board faster than normal cutting use. If your board picks up an onion or garlic smell, sprinkle coarse salt over it, rub it in with the cut side of a lemon or lime, let it sit a couple minutes, then wipe clean and dry.
Oiling schedule:
Regular conditioning keeps a board looking great for decades — we recommend our Wood Tonic, handcrafted in our shop alongside every product we make, applied monthly for daily use or quarterly for lighter use. If the wood looks dry, pale, or dull, it's time for a treatment regardless of schedule. Avoid substituting olive or vegetable oil — cooking oils can turn rancid on wood and won't protect it properly.
Finish and food safety:
Walnut boards are finished with Mahoney's Walnut Oil and Wax Combo — a food-safe oil-and-wax finish. Cherry and maple boards are finished with Walrus Oil's Cutting Board Oil and Wood Wax — also a food-safe oil-and-wax finish. Both are made specifically for cutting boards and butcher blocks.
Will this really last?
With proper care, yes — for generations, not just years. Solid wood, cared for the way we describe above, doesn't wear out the way most kitchen tools do. Many of our customers tell us they're buying a board they expect their kids to fight over one day. That's the idea.
